Lullabies are often sung by mothers to help soothe infants and promote sleep. Fathers, siblings, grandparents, and nannies also sing lullabies to children. Singing lullabies is routine in child care across all cultures, with expressions of hopeful expectations of the child's health and successes.
Lullaby songs are often described as the natural means of musical self-expression.
Many lullabies are songs of praise and love, some are linked to magical spells or charms, and others allow for the release of feelings of discontent. Songs ease the pains and pressures of daily life and provide a socially acceptable way of venting hostility and grievances.
